The 5 Best Coffee Roasters in Manchester for Remarkably Crafted Brews (Sipped & Approved!)

Selection and Quality - A coffee roastery shop must offer a variety of beans to cater to different taste preferences. Good roasters will have fresh, high-quality, and distinct flavours.

Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing - Roasters that support farms, local communities, and prioritise sustainable practices come first. They have a social and environmental responsibility to ensure safe practices.

Availability - Most coffee roasters in Manchester will have storefronts, allowing customers to try out their roasts without needing to blindly buy a whole bag.

Prices - We don’t expect good, sustainable coffee to be dirt cheap, but it should provide good value for money based on taste and quality.

I like coffee. Period. I’m no pro by any means, but I do know how to filter out the bad ones. I like my rich, strong coffee, with an aroma so intense, you’ll smell it on my clothes.

Luckily, Manchester is home to loads of independent cafes and roasters, which have been part of my daily routine. On days when I don’t have to sit and type on my laptop, I enjoy discovering new places to try.

I’ve bought so many types of coffee, it now fills two cupboards in my kitchen. So even though I’m not an expert, I can confidently say that I know what good coffee tastes like.

So here I am, finally sharing my and my team’s favourite coffee roasters in Manchester, handpicked after years of coffee-sipping experience!

Nestled in the historic Royal Mills, Ancoats Coffee Co has become one of our favourite local micro-roastery-slash-cafes in Manchester. It’s always filled with aromas and distinct coffee flavours, which brings in an inviting atmosphere.

It’s no shocker that you’ll receive specialty coffee at this roastery, handpicked from ethical growers in some of the best coffee producers, such as Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, and Ethiopia. All beans are also roasted in-house for peak flavours.

A crowd favourite—and certainly ours too—is the flagship Warehouse City espresso, a Brazil natural single-origin with chocolatey and nutty flavours that produces a consistent brew.

Additionally, their roastery delivers a variety of coffee beans, from decaf to fruity. It’s easy to sample one out, as their cafe serves all the kinds of coffee your morning needs any day of the week. Just be ready for the morning rush crowd.

But if you’re snowed under, ordering is rather convenient. You’re free to choose whatever grind you prefer, all roast-to-order, and usually dispatched within 1 to 2 days, ensuring freshness with every delivery.

Pros

  • Micro-roastery and cafe in one
  • All beans are carefully selected
  • Roasted in-house
  • Variety of flavour profiles available
  • Deliveries are roast-to-order
  • Cafe is open daily

Cons

  • Cafe is packed during peak hours

A coffee house that sells good coffee

“Ancoats Coffee Co has an atmospheric beauty that I couldn’t imagine you’d get anywhere else in Manchester. A huge plus is that it’s a coffee house that sells good coffee ☕️ you won’t believe how many places in Manchester that sells terrible drinks. They have clean toilet facilities and a seating area outside. The arch’s inside are beautiful and I overall thinks it’s lovely.  Recommend grabbing an iced coffee and taking a walk to the marina.”

Perfect place to visit for a fantastic coffee

“Perfect place to visit for a fantastic coffee. The shop has such a cosy vibe to it and is a great place to just enjoy their in-house roasted coffees. I got a flat white and my wife got an iced coffee and it’s safe to say that you’d struggle to find better quality in Manchester City centre. I bought some of their beans to put in our home coffee machine and accidentally forgot them on the table. We returned and the lovely staff had kept it behind the counter for us and knew it was us. We have visited a couple of times now but this is now our go-to Manchester coffee shop. Proud to support an independent business!”

Tucked under the railway arches, ManCoCo is a coffee bar and roastery in one, located just a hop and a skip from Deansgate. The space is a bit tight, but it’s open daily.

Here, you’ll also find specialty-grade coffee beans ethically sourced from around the globe. Their single-origin coffee beans come in an array of flavours, which was a pleasant surprise, given that they operate a small, artisan coffee bar.

The ManCoCo Espresso blend is worth a try for its deliciously dark chocolate flavour, made from three coffee beans: Brazilian, Sumatran, and Ethiopian. It’s rich yet versatile, which we find is perfect for sweet drink concoctions.

We love how customers can purchase their beans in-store and online, from decaf to robust flavours. It’s also remarkable that the team prioritises quality over quantity by roasting only small batches of coffee beans to ensure freshness.

The best bit of it all? A 250g blend usually starts at £8, which is one of the most reasonably priced yet delicious coffee beans we’ve seen in Manchester.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Equipped with a coffee bar
  • Wide array of coffee flavours
  • Roasts small batches only
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Coffee bar is quite small

A hidden gem in Manchester

“Mancoco Coffee Bar & Roastery is a hidden gem in Manchester! The coffee is exceptional, with beans roasted in-house for that perfect fresh, bold flavor. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready with great recommendations. Prices are reasonable, especially for the quality, and the cozy ambiance makes it a great spot to relax or work. Don’t miss their single-origin espresso—it’s fantastic or simply a flat white! Highly recommend for any coffee lover.”

When it comes down to ethically sourced coffee beans in Manchester, Blossom Coffee Roasters is a name that always pops up. They stick to transparent sourcing and strong, long-term relationships with coffee producers.

To give you an idea, they work with the same coffee bean producers each year by getting their beans from a single supply chain for every origin. Everything is intentional in this place, including their pricing.

True to their words, they even publish a yearly transparency report to show exactly where they’re getting their beans from, mostly from Brazil and Colombia. The ethical standards don’t end there, as they extend to their packaging.

Every coffee bag you purchase is made from recycled materials, resulting in clean and secure packaging. But unlike other roasters in Manchester, they don’t have a storefront.

The coffee remains incredible, though! We’ve tasted fresh, balanced aromas from the packs we’ve gambled in, where every sip feels intentional, just like their business practices.

Pros

  • Transparent sourcing
  • Works with the same producers yearly
  • Produces an annual transparency report
  • Sustainable packaging

Cons

  • No storefront

My go-to coffee roastery in the UK

“My go-to coffee roastery in the UK. Love this place and their beans are perfect. A fresh morning cuppa of this stuff is sure to wake you up.”

The taste of the coffee is amazing

“My first order of Blossom coffee arrived, the packaging was lovely, understated elegance. The taste of the coffee is amazing. It is very smooth yet full bodied. I have made it for guests and they have  enjoyed the flavour. I bought the ground coffee and brew it in a cafetière . Thank you .”

Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or a casual drinker, Heart & Graft has something for you. They have coffee beans for every palate—mild, strong, or elegant—while offering specialty flavours you won’t find easily in Manchester.

For instance, they have a good range of coffee beans, from house blends to single-origin, whether you’re searching for something sweet or tarty. Expect bold flavour profiles with every roast while maintaining a delicate balance.

Plus, their coffee subscriptions are worth the money, particularly their Crazy Horse Wild & Fruity option, which has rare and experimental blends. You can tell with every sip that the standard is high, as the coffee beans are freshly ground at the roastery.

They don’t have a cafe, but their Cheetham Hill roastery is open to the public for those who want to sample their products. It would’ve been perfect if they allowed weekend visits, but we can’t have it all now, can we?

Pros

  • Offers classic and experimental flavours
  • Variety of options for every taste
  • Solid coffee subscriptions
  • Freshly ground coffee beans

Cons

  • No weekend roastery visits

Friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff

“I have been a customer of Heart and Graft for over a year now and it is the only roastery in Manchester I can recommend, at this point. I have had dealings with two other roasters but found them wanting either in product quality or customer service. I make espresso at home and thoroughly enjoy both the 60/40 and Barnraiser varieties. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff.”

– Simon Ashworth, Google Review

Always great coffee

“Always great coffee. The House Blends are particularly good. I keep coming back to order more. I should probably get a subscription. I meant to leave this review about a month ago after receiving some excellent customer service from Michael.”

Kobean Coffee Roasters has never disappointed us. With a focus on forging strong relationships with independent producers, they can ensure every customer gets to taste high-quality coffee.

Lo and behold, the coffee blends here have balanced flavours and strong aromas. Since they focus on micro-lots, they only roast small batches of coffee, prioritising quality over quantity.

It was no surprise that they produce excellent coffee, given their access to award-winning exotic varietals. In addition, they specialise in experimental coffee, made using non-traditional methods to create unique and specialty flavours.

Furthermore, you’ll discover rare coffee beans with complex taste profiles. You won’t find these in most places in Manchester, as they mainly come from small productions.

We did enjoy our time at their humble cafe-roastery in Stockport, which gets busy, given that they’re rather popular in the local neighbourhood. If you want to sample their coffee beans, we recommend sitting in the outdoor area and having a chat with your mates.

Pros

  • Highlights independent producers
  • A micro-lot roastery
  • Specialises in experimental coffee
  • Quality over quantity
  • Has a humble cafe

Cons

  • Cafe gets packed

Fantastic coffee

“Fantastic coffee always served with a smile. This is one of my favourite places to get a cup of coffee when in Manchester. It has a few benches outside too so on a nice day you can just sit in the open air and enjoy your amazing cup of coffee. There are plenty of options for cakes and pastries too which I would definitely recommend.”

– S AS, Google Review

A place for people who enjoy modern style espresso

“Excellent specialty coffee. That is, a place for people who enjoy modern style espresso where you can taste the fruity fresh/vibrant taste of lighter roasted coffee beans.”

– Yasmin Antwertinger, Google Review
