Pros
- Beautiful interiors and garden
- Wide selection of food and drinks
- Accommodating staff members
- Open everyday
- Accessible location
Cons
- Reports of inconsistent food quality
During our visit at The Hartshead, we were captivated by the charm of its interiors – beamed ceilings and the warmth of an open fire crackling away – the works. Their garden is our favourite, though, which is a great place for a stroll when taking a break from drinking.
Beyond the picturesque surroundings that pleased our eyes, our taste buds were also tantalised by their Mediterranean-inspired menu. From the indulgent Hunter’s Chicken Schnitzel to the comforting Premium Sausages & Mash, each dish boasted flavours that danced on the palate.
However, while we’re happy with the food that was served to us, we think it’s worth noting that a few patrons we surveyed have reported receiving overcooked meals.
On a more positive note, we were impressed that The Hartshead has a wide selection of drinks that suits every mood! For instance, they have a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options — with their fresh juices and cask ales as our favourites.
But what truly distinguishes The Hartshead Inn is their service. We appreciate their staff’s expertise in menu offerings and wine pairings, coupled with their genuine enthusiasm.
Furthermore, we appreciate that an average visit here costs between £20 to £30. For us, when you factor in the quality of their offerings and their service, they’re definitely worth a try!
We’re also happy to share that they are open every day. On top of this, their accessible location at Mossley Road also makes dropping by even easier.

Pros
- Accessible location
- Open everyday
- Quick customer service
- Has live music and karaoke machine
- Affordable menu
Cons
- Limited food options
Hare & Hounds caught our attention with their prime location. In fact, they’re just opposite the Shudehill transport interchange, which ensures easy access for all.
Moreover, we also appreciate that they’re open every day! This is a plus for groups like us who have to consider various schedules before planning a night out.
Upon visiting the establishment, we were amazed at the Hare & Hounds’ historical significance. A staff member shared that the establishment had been remodelled around 1925, but it has roots dating back to the 1800s!
For us, the bar’s longevity is a testament to its service. How it’s such a beloved watering hole impressed us!
As such, we weren’t surprised when we found such accommodating staff in the premises. For instance, during our visit, we were immediately greeted by a prompt staff member who led us to our table right away and was quick in addressing all of our requests as well.
We must note, however, that we found the food options here quite limited. On the bright side, we’re pleased that they compensate with a diverse and satisfying array of drinks.
We found ourselves particularly drawn to their selection of beers, particularly their Holts, Smiths, and Fosters. On top of this, they also have wine, spirits, and cocktails.
Another thing we enjoyed at the Hare & Hounds’ was the live music performance. They even have a karaoke machine for customers who want to sing themselves!
Surprisingly, despite their prime location and historical charm, we’re happy that the establishment remains incredibly affordable as an average visit here costs less than £10—a huge steal!

Pros

Cons
- Reports of rude and dismissive staff members
From what we’ve seen in our visit, we believe that The Pit Stop is the haven for sports enthusiasts. Here, they offer live coverage of all sports, including Sky Racing and BT Sports — so no match is missed!
We also appreciate the lively atmosphere at the bar. It’s complete with a beer garden, function room, pool table, darts board, and football table – making it an ideal spot for gatherings and events.
Luckily, a staff member mentioned that customers have the option to rent the entire place for private functions!
Moving on, we were treated to a mouth-watering selection of burgers. Our top picks are their classic cheeseburger, hot chick burger, and veggie burger.
And when it comes to their drinks, we’re glad to say that The Pit Stop doesn’t disappoint. We give them a thumbs up for covering all the essentials, from beers and ales to expertly crafted cocktails.
We also appreciate their accessible location that made it easy for us to visit them. On top of this, they are also operational everyday up to wee hours in the morning!
While we had a pleasant time overall, we must acknowledge that some patrons have reported instances of rudeness and dismissiveness from the crew. We hope they can improve on this aspect so all customers will have a good overall experience.
Despite occasional setbacks, we think that The Pit Stop remains a worthwhile destination, offering reasonably priced meals averaging between £10 to £20.

Pros
- Wide menu
- Knowledgeable staff members
- Accessible location
- Open everyday
Cons
- Expensive menu
The Sheldon Arms reached our radar because we’ve heard whispers about their stellar food selection. After visiting them in its convenient location along Sheldon’s Way, we can certainly see why many have been raving!
Their menu boasts a wide array of options, but we couldn’t resist indulging in their famous daily rotisserie and carvery. We savoured delights like the roast British beef and spit-roasted half rotisserie chicken, and we’re glad to report that each bite was satisfying.
Additionally, we were pleased to discover inclusive options like the Quinoa, Beetroot and Edamame Roast with vegan gravy.
Another plus for us is how The Sheldon Arms is filled with many bevvy options. Here, they offer everything from beers and ciders to wines and bubbles! And another point for inclusivity is their arrow of comforting hot drinks like coffee, hot chocolate, and tea.
Their attentive staff also impressed us with their politeness and knowledge. We especially appreciate how they patiently guided us through the extensive menu with ease.
Admittedly, indulging at The Sheldon Arms may dent one’s wallet. We’re a bit taken aback that an average visit here ranges between £30 to £40!
However, when we consider their delectable dishes, refreshing drinks, and commendable customer service — we’re convinced that they’re worth every penny.

Pros
- Affordable drinks
- Lively atmosphere
- Live sports and music
- Accommodating staff members
- Accessible location
Cons
- Closes early
Affordability meets enjoyment at Top End Bar. We’re impressed that their prices start from a mere £1.70 a pint during Happy Hour—brilliant, eh?
When we dropped by, we were impressed with their extensive beverage selection. Here, they offer options like Carling, Fosters, Thwaites, John Smiths, Strongbow, and Appleshed — ensuring there’s something to suit every taste bud.
We also noticed that entertainment is never lacking at Top End Bar. There is a live sports game airing on their wide screens and occasional live performers that add to the excitement.
Furthermore, the staff members deserve commendation for their pleasant attitude and attentive service. We give them plus points for ensuring that our requests were promptly addressed throughout our visit.
Another aspect that pleased us is that Top End Bar is just a 10-minute jaunt from Ashton-under-Lyne station. We also noted that there are ample parking slots available for those arriving by car.
On the other hand, while they’re open every day, we think it’s worth noting that they close earlier compared to other bars in the area — which might be a slight inconvenience for some.
Nevertheless, despite this minor drawback, we’re confident that Top End Bar remains one of the top choices — especially for the budget-conscious.
