Pros
- Has good location
- Open 24 hours
- Has affordable rates
Cons
- Has instances where no staff members are available
The Gym Group is a renowned fitness chain with five branches in Manchester, but let’s focus on their Portland Street location.
We think this branch is the most popular one thanks to its prime location and accessibility. Plus, it’s open 24 hours!
That’s right, you can work on your runway walk or practise your poses anytime you want.
Now, let’s talk about facilities. We believe that this gym is a true powerhouse, equipped with top-notch equipment and boasting a clean and well-automated environment.
They even have CCTV cameras to ensure your safety. Plus, we like that they offer essential items like padlocks, drinks, and energy bars from their handy vending machines.
When it comes to customer service, we give them plus points. The staff is dedicated, warm, and always ready to assist you — according to their regulars.
Unfortunately, we discovered that there is a lack of on-site staff at certain times. This means that if you encounter any issues, there might not be someone readily available to help – which is something that definitely turned us off.
On a more positive note, we like that they offer great value for money since they offer a no-contract membership for just £20.99 a month.

Pros
- Has good location
- Open 24 hours
- Has a lot of equipment variety
Cons
- Has three storeys that can be challenging to navigate
One thing we really like about PureGym Market Street is its accessibility. Located in the heart of Manchester, it’s easy to reach, making it convenient for both residents and office-goers.
Plus, they’re open 24 hours, so you can fit in a workout whenever you’re available.
When we stepped into this gym, we were impressed. It’s clean and surprisingly quiet. This tranquil atmosphere helps you focus on your workout and truly enjoy the experience.
We also like that they have multiple floors with equipment organised neatly. The downside to this, though, is that some members found it hard to navigate the stairs within the gym and can be a bit annoying.
With three storeys, we agree that it’s not ideal for seamless transitions between workouts. However, the abundance of space ensures you won’t feel crowded, even when the gym is packed.
On top of this, we learned that the variety of equipment available gives ample opportunities to switch things up if your favourite machine is occupied.
On top of this, members also praised the reasonable pricing and the range of facilities available.

Pros
- Has an accessible location
- Has clean facilities
- Has many variety of equipment
Cons
- Not operational for 24 hours
- Can be crowded
JD Gyms is a fantastic option for fitness enthusiasts in Manchester. While it may not be open 24 hours like some other gyms, it’s open seven days a week – giving you plenty of opportunities to work up a sweat.
One thing we really like about JD Gyms is its accessible location. Whether you prefer to drive or take public transport, getting to the gym is a breeze.
We have to say, their members really like this gym. According to them, it’s always clean and provides a great overall workout experience.
Furthermore, the facility is well-maintained, and you’ll find all the machines you could possibly want!
However, it’s important to note that JD Gyms can get incredibly busy. One member shared that it feels like everyone in town is trying to get their pump on during peak hours.
So, we suggest avoiding the gym between 4:00 to 8:00 pm since most people are at work and not many are working out.
JD Gyms offers two types of membership: Standard and Plus+. With prices starting at £21.99 per month, both options give you access to classes and facilities without the hassle of a contract — which is great if you ask us.

Customer Service | 5/5 |
Pros
- Offers other amenities like pool, sauna, and steam room
- Has commendable instructors
Cons
- Can be crowded in the afternoon
- Sells expensive towels
Starting at £29.95 per month, some might consider this gym a bit pricey. But we think King Street Gym offers great value for money.
Not only does it have all the standard gym equipment you’d expect, but it also stands out from the crowd by having a pool, sauna, and steam room. If you ask us, it’s like a mini wellness retreat right in the heart of the city.
On top of this, we also like its central location that allows members to drop by regularly and stick to their routines.
Another thing to keep in mind is that King Street Gym can get a bit busy after 5:00 pm on certain days.
But don’t worry, as it’s not as overcrowded as some other gyms! You still have room to work up a sweat without feeling like you’re in a sardine can.
Moving on, we have to give a special shout-out to the Friday yoga class. We learned that it’s a favourite among members.
According to them, the incredible instructors create a fantastic atmosphere to relax and workout.
However, we discovered that the reception’s towel situation needs improvement. We believe that selling low-quality towels for £10 each is a bit steep.
Luckily, you can bring your own towels instead.

Staff Members | 5/5 |
Pros
- Has a good location
- Has commendable customer service
Cons
- Has instances of strong odours in the corridors and a lack of ventilation in facilities
For this review, we will focus on the Bannatyne Health Club at Quay Street since this provides easier access to members compared to their other branches.
However, we have to admit, we were a bit disappointed to discover that the gym isn’t operational 24 hours a day. However, we appreciate that they open early.
Now, let’s talk about the facilities. We believe that Bannatyne Health Club hits the nail on the head with everything they offer.
From an abundance of cardio machines to heavy dumbbells and a spacious gym, they’ve got you covered.
Plus, we think that one of the best perks is the free access to the pool, steam room, and sauna. It’s like a mini getaway within your fitness routine.
At £29.99 per month, it may seem a tad pricey. However, considering the extensive facilities and fantastic amenities, we believe it’s justified.
Customer service is another area where Bannatyne Health Club excels. We were impressed with their self-check-in computers in the lobby and a fantastic, spacious dressing area.
Unfortunately, we discovered a few things we are iffy about. Some members have expressed dissatisfaction with the facilities and maintenance.
Sadly, there have been instances of strong odours in the corridors and a lack of ventilation in the changing room making for a less than ideal experience.
