The Top 5 Orthopaedic Specialists in Manchester to Get from Joint Pain to No Pain!

  • Qualifications and Specialisation - A licensed and qualified surgeon is a given, so we checked for their track record of successful operations to ensure they have the proper training for various types of orthopaedic treatments.
  • Professionalism and Bedside Manner - It’s highly important for a doctor to provide a patient-centric approach to make certain they will listen and show empathy.
  • Availability and Clinic Locations - It’s common for doctors to see patients from more than one clinic, which allows Mancunians to get the surgery at the nearest facility. Massive points to surgeons who have a good number of slots.
  • Fees - An orthopaedic surgeon who charges reasonable rates gets prioritised, as well as those who are transparent about the whole payment process.

We can’t deny that as we grow older, our joints get weaker. It’ll hit you like a brick (and sometimes feel like an actual brick), especially when joint problems are passed down to you through genetics—yay, me… not.

When the pain is too much to bear, and waiting at the NHS is taking ages, going private is the next step. And as someone who has gone through a scary knee surgery, I know what to look for to get top-notch treatment.

I employed the help of my team, and we researched (and walked carefully) all over Manchester to give you the best of the best. Here are our trusted orthopaedic specialists who will take away the pain with every step!

One of our most trusted orthopaedic specialists in Manchester is Mr. Amit Kumar because of his impressive track record. He’s highly qualified, as he specialises in hip and knee surgeries, while still providing treatments for unexplained joint pains.

He’s a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who works for the NHS and private hospitals. In fact, he practices at several facilities in the city, making him accessible to patients who live all over Greater Manchester.

As far as orthopaedic treatments go, he specialises in a lot: hips, knees, lumps, bumps, and other types of joint pain, with a more focused interest in musculoskeletal oncology.

But he’s got a lot going on, considering the many clinics he works at, so some places (like OrthTeam Centre) have limited availability. At this clinic, he’s available every other Wednesday.

But despite his impressive credentials, he still manages to charge reasonable fees per consult. Add that to his top-notch bedside manner—by being empathetic, supportive, and informative—and he’s golden!

Pros

  • Works in several Manchester clinics
  • Practices in the NHS and private hospitals
  • Wide area of expertise
  • Reasonable fees
  • Excellent bedside manner

Cons

  • Limited availability in some clinics

Brilliant at explaining the entire process

“Mr Amit Kumar was brilliant at explaining the entire process of my knee replacement. He was never condescending, always spoke in clear, understandable terms and always listened to, and resolved, any queries that I had. He was always fast and efficient and yet I never felt hurried. He was great at explaining all the options but always remaining clear about his advice. He also really made sure that I understood that this was going to be a long and difficult healing process which helped me to prepare properly. My life is transformed following the surgery. ❤️🙏2”

It was hardly shocking when Mr. Winston Kim made it to our list. It was on the cards once we saw his impressive track record, as he’s a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Manchester Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle.

To sweeten it more, he’s renowned for using advanced techniques, like the MAKO Robot-Assisted Technology. His list of achievements doesn’t stop there, as he’s the first in Northern England to carry out robot-assisted total and partial knee replacements.

In fact, he has performed the largest number of robot-assisted hip and knee replacement surgeries in the UK—over 1,500 overall! Impressive, really, as these numbers make him highly experienced in more precise planning.

With a portfolio like this, it’s no surprise that he’s busy, and yet, he doesn’t have long waiting times to see patients and perform surgeries. He’s even available for in-person and online consults, with clinic hours five days a week.

The only catch is that Mr. Kim doesn’t see NHS patients, but it’s not like his consultation fees cost an arm and a leg.

Pros

  • UK’s most robot-assisted knee and hip surgeries
  • Impressive robot-assisted surgery track record
  • No long waiting list
  • Easy to book an appointment
  • Open for remote patients; online consults

Cons

  • Doesn’t see NHS patients

My progress has been superb

“I had my operation in February , my right knee was replaced by Mr Kim, my progress has been superb, the 2 days I was in hospital at Spire th3 care was excellent. I’m glad I had the operation it’s given me a new lease of life. I’d have no problem recommending Mr Kim and have already done so to my nieces Father in Law (don’t know whether he’s acted on the recommendation though)”

My surgery has been life-changing

“Mr Kim performed my left knee replacement 16 months ago. It was so wonderful that 4 months ago I had the right knee replaced. My surgery has been life changing. For the first time in over 14 years I now walk tall and upright, no more limping, and best of all no more pain. I am so grateful to Mr Kim and would recommend his skills to anyone suffering from knee problems.”

Professor Max Fehily stood out to us in an instant because he’s established and highly experienced in orthopaedics. He works at Spire Hospital and OrthTeam Centre, and that’s in addition to being Manchester Hip Clinic’s lead surgeon and clinical director.

He focuses on hip surgeries, but his main interest is robotic hip replacements and using stem cell or cartilage grafting for keyhole surgeries. Incredible, and even though the latter is known for being minimally invasive, it requires more specialised skills.

Moreover, he performs around 200 keyhole surgeries each year, and this number makes the Manchester Hip Clinic a high-volume centre and one of the highest in the UK.

And we’re not done with his accomplishments. He’s also the first in North West England to perform MAKO robotic hip replacements—he’s an impressive one at that.

It makes sense that he’s a busy fellow, which is most likely why he doesn’t have a lot of appointment slots in his other clinics. But for a highly established orthopaedic specialist, his fees aren’t too dear, something his patients have also noted.

Pros

  • Impressive credentials
  • 1st to perform MAKO robotic hip replacement in the North West
  • Experienced in keyhole surgeries
  • Performs a high number of keyhole surgeries

Cons

  • Limited slots in other clinics

The care I received was excellent from the start

“Thank you Max! I’m absolutely delighted with my new hip and couldn’t be more grateful to the fantastic team who looked after me. The care I received was excellent from start to finish, with a great level of information provided before, during, and after the procedure. I always felt well-informed and reassured, and it’s been great to know I can reach out with any questions. A huge thank you to everyone involved!”

The extensive experience of Mr. Bilal Barkatali makes him one of our most trusted orthopaedic specialists in Manchester, and once you see it, you’ll feel the same way. He specialises in knee surgeries, and by that, we mean every aspect of it.

Furthermore, he’s the one who established The Knee Clinic, which has access to advanced technologies. One example is that Mr. Barkatali performs robotic-assisted total and partial knee surgeries, although hip surgeries aren’t his main focus.

Aside from his private clinic, he also sees NHS patients, as he’s a consultant knee surgeon for the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. As a cherry on top, he practices at several places aside from the Spire Hospital—the OrthTeam Centre, for instance.

The waiting list won’t take ages, luckily. The overall support from him and his team is incredible anyway, so much so that most patients noted their fast recovery from the excellent care and successful surgery.

Pros

  • Sees private and NHS patients
  • Established The Knee Clinic
  • Uses advanced surgery techniques
  • Excellent overall support

Cons

  • Main focus doesn’t include hip surgeries

Compassionate, considerate, and extremely friendly

“I received an excellent service from both the team and Dr Barkatali himself. I found him compassionate, considerate and extremely friendly. He was patient and offered other options to try before succumbing to surgery which we were very grateful for. The hospital treatment and stay were superb. The staff, friendly, helpful and caring i have received excellent physio therapy And after-care, if you have to have a knee replacement, it’s the team to book in with Dr Batkatali is an excellent surgeon. I am very pleased with the result after only eight weeks. I am back on my bike and walking without pain or aid it’s fabulous.”

Lorraine Whalley, Google Review

His calming presence gave me confidence

“Mr Barkatali has recently looked after me with knee surgery through a very challenging time, as I am scared of needles and surgery. His calming presence from the offset gave me confidence in his ability to get me through this time. The surgery was very complicated due to the level of damage I had put my knee through, However with Mr Barkatali’s excellent knowledge and experience I am on the road to a full recovery. Bilal Thankyou for your time and quality service. I hope next time I see you it will be under different circumstance. All the best and Thankyou again!”

It’s truly brilliant how accessible Mr. Vijaya Kempanna is. He’s an orthopaedic specialist who has two private practices (in West Didsbury and Rochdale) and sees NHS patients through Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

His expertise is focused on pretty much all hip and knee problems, including pelvic and acetabular surgeries. Impressively, he’s experienced in treating complex trauma in the hips and knees.

Additionally, his extensive expertise leads other doctors to refer their patients to his clinic. It’s no shocker, given that he employs robotic techniques for better accuracy during hip and knee surgeries.

The results we’ve seen didn’t disappoint us. The patients we spoke with only had positive experiences, from the initial consultation to aftercare, as Mr. Kempanna performed outstandingly, even in complicated surgeries.

As any orthopaedic surgeon who accepts private and NHS patients, his calendar’s going to be packed, particularly at his Rochdale clinic, which has fewer consultation slots. It’s a short wait, though, and it’s worth it for the reasonable consult fee.

Pros

  • Sees NHS and private patients
  • Specialises in complex trauma
  • Accessible doctor
  • Excellent patient support throughout
  • Reasonable exonsultation fee

Cons

  • Fewer consult slots in the Rochdale clinic

From start to finish, he and his team were amazing

“Dr Vijaya Kempanna and his team performed a left hip replacement on me in September 2025.From start to finish Dr Kempanna and his team at Highfield hospital have been absolutely amazing in their care, reassurance and professionalism.I would highly recommend Dr Vijaya Kempanna.”

Kenny Cooper, Google Review

Absolute professional

“Mr Kempanna is an absolute professional and absolute gentleman. From our first meeting I was reassured I was in capable hands. He guided me with care throughout and my total hip replacement surgery has been life changing. Couldn’t recommend him enough.”
