There’s also a very good kids’ brunch menu with everything from Greek yoghurt with jam to smashed avocado on toast for your junior hipster.

After brunch finishes (at 4 PM, you lazy folks), it becomes more of a drinking destination with tasty bar snacks to pair with all those craft beers and natural wines.

All The Shapes is exactly the sort of place you’d hang out in all the time if you lived anywhere near M25. As well as a friendly atmosphere, good drinks, and tasty food, there are also exhibitions by up-and-coming artists, DJs, quiz nights, talks, screenings, and the like.

Like the interloping bird that gives it its name, Cuckoo was an odd-one-out when it first opened in Prestwich back in 2013. Since then, a whole flock of like-minded indie café-bars have landed in this suburb, but this one is still a favourite for many.

Cuckoo is a colourful, vibrant gem known for its eclectic décor and lively atmosphere; it’s known for its simple menu of stone-baked sourdough pizzas with ‘red’ or ‘white’ toppings. The ‘Luca’ with anchovies, pine nuts, roasted garlic, and capers, is an example of the former.

On weekends, they also offer a small brunch menu, including a full English menu. Cocktails are another strength. They stick to the classics but do them well.

Cuckoo’s laid-back, exposed brick and wood interior is an inviting setting for a Salford Roasters coffee in the day, or an espresso martini at night. The covered garden at the back is a hidden sunspot (with outdoor heaters, of course).

Pro tip:
Try their signature cocktails to start any evening out perfectly.

Based in a former chip shop, this spot has transformed into an upmarket takeaway with a cosy seating area, serving all the street food wonders that won people over on Oldham Street. It’s the place to be for massive bagels and towering burgers that will have you coming back for more.

Go for the classic reuben with pastrami, grilled Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, or the vegan bagel, which centres on an edamame and sweetcorn patty. The Triple B burgers are equally huge and feature their own homemade patties, perfect for a hearty meal.

They also do big trays of loaded fries, mac ‘n’ cheese, and chicken ribs. Think hangover food rather than healthy eating. And if you’re up for the hair of the dog, the drinks menu includes frozen cocktails and boozy shakes, alongside slushies and the usual soft drinks.

Pro tip:
Indulge in the boozy shakes to kick off your meal.

The Pearl in Prestwich styles itself as a ‘British dining room’, but there’s plenty of French influence here too. Even though it only opened in autumn 2023, it feels like it’s been a staple of the community forever.

Head chef Iain Thomas, formerly of The Alan, places emphasis on locally sourced produce in his technically impressive, thoughtful cooking.

Dishes change weekly, but a typical starter could be Isle of Wight tomatoes with English burrata, or a main of roast Shetland cod with confit chicken, clam sauce, and Exmoor caviar. It’s the perfect spot for a sophisticated yet comfortable meal.

There’s also a set lunch menu on Saturdays. Visit on summer evenings for al fresco drinks served out of a Tuscan-inspired wine door, adding a touch of European elegance to your night.

None of your Neapolitan nonsense for Michael Clay – the Elnecot chef-patron so loves crispy New York and Philadelphia-style pizza that he spent months getting the formula just right for a dunkable crust made from a special, cold-fermented dough of British heritage grain flour.

Start with their dips – hot Saddleworth honey, confit garlic and herb, Wharfe Valley truffle mayonnaise, and Chepyn Blue ranch. Trust me, you’ll want to try them all.

Now, let’s dive into the pizzas. You’ve got your basics like margherita with rich fior di latte mozzarella, but the funghi with wild, seasonal mushrooms and truffle is a game-changer. Fancy something heartier?

The Grandad’s features famous Manchester sausages, and the Roll Right is like a pizza version of an Alpine tartiflette with oozing Reblochon-reminiscent cheese, new potatoes, smoked bacon, and white onion.

Afters include classic combos such as lemon posset with macerated strawberries and basil or chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream and popcorn.

Pro tip:
Don’t miss the bottomless brunch for endless fun.

As Manchester’s own, independent (and we would say, superior) version of Pizza Express, Croma was always going to feature strongly in our guide. This brand is gradually colonising the city’s leafiest neighbourhoods.

Alongside the original city centre restaurant, there are now Cromas in Chorlton, Didsbury, and on the Bury border with Croma Prestwich. Its chic glass and wood architecture has brought a touch of class to the Longfield Centre.

Inside, you’ll find a friendly, efficient team making everyone feel at home – from families with children, to big groups, to date night couples. Their light, colourful pizzas are the main attraction – it’s what this mini-Manc empire was built on.

Pro tip:
Try their seasonal specials, they’re always a delightful surprise!

Wine and Wallop Prestwich caters to your every whim, whether it’s coffee, cake, or cocktail hour. With shabby chic stripped wood, leatherette banquettes, vintage nick nacks, eclectic lampshades, hidden nooks, and jazzy walls, it’s all about laid-back and chill vibes.

Food runs from breakfast right through until early evening, with options like an 8oz flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce and griddled tomatoes and mushrooms, or beer-battered fish and chips with real mushy peas and house-made tartare sauce.

If you’re in the mood for a butty, try the haddock goujons on toasted bloomer or the lamb kofta in a pitta pocket with hummus and Greek salad. The burgers, including beef brioche, buttermilk chicken, and a plant-based patty with vegan cheese, are crowd-pleasers too.

For small plates, think salt cod bon bons or bang bang chicken skewers; there’s a Mediterranean-inspired sharing board with Manchego cheese, Parma ham, padron peppers, and focaccia. And the “Nibble & Chat” section offers marinated olives and ciabatta garlic bread.

And if you’re only here for the wine, get involved in Wine & Wallop’s Wine Club for regular tastings, dinners, and seasonal wine fairs. Wine and beer are also available to takeaway at shop price.

Pro tip:
Join their Wine Club for exclusive tastings and events, it’s a must if you are a wine enthusiast!
