What is the history of Etherow Country Park?
Early History and the Compstall Mill
In the late 18th century, Etherow Country Park was the site of the Compstall Mill. The Mill was a cotton spinning mill established by George Andrew around 1790, and it utilised the water power from the Etherow River to operate.
To support the mill, a weir and mill pond were constructed to ensure a steady supply of water. The Mill became one of the prominent local employers during this period, driving population growth and the development of Compstall as a village.
