Mana, Manchester’s first Michelin-starred eatery since 1977, is the buzz of the town for all the right reasons.
It’s the ideal location for a special occasion supper since chef-patron Simon Martin has worked diligently to develop cutting-edge cuisine. We love that it highlights the best in British ingredients.
But one of the things that impressed us the most is that they are hyper-seasonal. As such, their menu changes frequently based on what’s fresh during the season.
We love that you can expect to be introduced to new tastes and sensations with meals that come from the land, the field, and the sea.
Consequently, given the high rating of this restaurant, their pricing is quite steep, to say the least. Also, they only accept advanced reservations for their opening times.
From what we’ve seen, we wholeheartedly concur with the Michelin Guide’s statement about Mana: “High-quality cooking, worth a stop!”. For us, the high class feel that Mana gives is one of the most impressive places around the city.
Being a Michelin Star restaurant, Mana won’t be the kind of place you go every two weeks, but if you do have a special event coming up, there aren’t many places that can compare to it.
All things considered, not everyone enjoys or can afford fine dining, but if you do, Mana is unquestionably one of the greatest restaurants in Manchester.

Pros
- Excellent customer service
- Adequate food portions
- Vegetarian friendly
Cons
- Higher priced than the average restaurant
- Food quality can be a hit or miss
Erst is one of the more recent additions to the Ancoats neighbourhood, but there is no denying that they have left their mark on the urban village district.
Right off the bat, we think it’s important for customers to know that getting a table is nearly impossible. However, we think it’s safe to say that they are highly demanded for a great reason.
Ancoats’ culinary scene is elevated by this small, cosy restaurant along Murray St. Their whole vibe is relaxed yet sophisticated which makes them a great spot for intimate gatherings and even dates!
Even though each of these eateries provides a unique eating experience on its own, Erst will not let you down if you’re trying to reserve a spot that’s not extremely formal but nonetheless excellent.
We’re truly impressed that their simple and seasonally appropriate cuisine is served fresh.
As for their portions, their servings are adequate for one person, but we’re happy to find that they have some larger plates that’s great for sharing.
According to our research, they even consider the soil where the grapes are grown when compiling their wine range.
Furthermore, we love that their ingredients are organically grown, and some are natural, while some are bio-dynamic. We think that wine connoisseurs will be thrilled with their choices.
For beer lovers, we have good news! Erst serves a variety of beers on tap and in bottles—a mixture of regional favourites and some imports that will surely accommodate any beer-lovers preferences.
Overall, there’s no doubt why they are one of the most raved-about restaurants in the area. They’re a perfect choice for those who want upscale dining without extravagant prices.

Pros
- Great food quality
- Straight forward menu choices
- Clean and well-kept establishment
Cons
- Records of slow service
- Not suitable for large groups
Sud Pasta, formerly Sugo Pasta Kitchen, is a quaint restaurant in Ancoats that’s inspired by their founder’s South Italian heritage.
Despite having limited options on their menu, we love that every item there is excellent. Since everything is so delicious and well-done, we think the worst part about Sud is not knowing what to choose.
That said, we think Sud is the restaurant of choice if you aren’t watching your weight. Whenever we want to enjoy a substantial portion of freshly prepared pasta, this is our go-to place!
Furthermore, it’s a great spot to meet up with close friends and family, as its ambiance is quite intimate.
We love how its owners pay homage to the Italian family gathering where you can spend time enjoying great meals with great company. In our books, this makes it perfect for customers who want a family style dining.
That said, we do have to mention that it might not be the best choice for large groups with six people and above, as their space is quite small. However, if you don’t mind the smaller space, and you’re here for their food, you surely won’t be disappointed.
In addition, because of their popularity, they’re usually crowded especially during peak hours. We think this can be a challenge for those who are only available during the weekend rush.
Besides the limited space, we also have to mention that a lot of our client interviews mentioned that the service can be slow. The way we see it, since it’s crowded most of the time, this can be a deterrent.
Even so, for what they offer, they’re a great place to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine.
4. Elnecot

Pros
- Top-notch food quality
- Vegetarian Friendly, Vegan Options, Gluten Free Options
- Clean and well-kept establishment
- Pet-Friendly establishment
Cons
- Records of poor customer service
- Higher priced compared to others
Elnecot is an award-winning neighbourhood kitchen and bar located right off Cutting Room Square.
This famous weekend destination is famed for its massive Sunday roasts and delectable brunch platters which can be combined with endless beverages for just £20. Isn’t that great?
Breakfast, lunch, and supper are all available at Elnecot. Their bottomless brunch offers everything from lamb kebabs to scrambled eggs. We think this is great for those who want a substantial brunch date with their groups.
Elnecot is constantly buzzing at any time of day, and it’s a Friday favourite among Ancoats locals — and we couldn’t agree more. Given their excellent dishes, and great dining ambiance, it’s apparent why this establishment is a staple with locals.
In addition, Elnecot offers an amazing Happy Hour on Fridays, so it’s no surprise that our locals rush there for a Friday drink.
But we couldn’t write about Elnecot without mentioning their Sunday Roasts, which include wonderful gravy, beautiful fluffy roasties, and a massive Yorkshire pud for only £15 to £18.
Unlike other restaurants, Elnecot offers roasts until 8pm, so there’s no need to rush if you want to have a lazy Sunday.
Another thing we love about them is that they even accept our four-legged companions. We know there aren’t a lot of establishments that do this, so fur parents will surely be glad.
On the other hand,we’re a bit iffy about some feedback regarding their poor customer service. Some people we spoke with mentioned that, despite the popularity of the place, their staff service can sometimes be rude and slow.
We think that this might ruin the whole dining experience. We hope that Elnecot’s management can make some improvements to address these concerns so their dining experience is made even better!

Pros
- Top-notch food quality
- Authentic Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine dishes
- Clean and well-kept establishment
Cons
- Records of poor customer service
- Drink choices could be better
Canto is a charming local restaurant that brings a taste of sunny Portugal to the heart of Ancoats. It specialises on fresh seafood, seasonal small meals, and Mediterranean drinks.
Dining here is a laid-back event, with a casual environment and service with a smile.
As for their menu options, their croquettes and tapas are one of the most raved about from our surveys. And because they do everything so well, it’s difficult to pinpoint why Canto deserves to be on our list.
In addition, we’re also impressed with their attention to detail. From the luxurious decor to their luscious meals, they are a fantastic addition to the Ancoats dining scene.
But we must mention that, based on our surveys, a lot of the customers mentioned that their cocktails need improvement.
We think this might be a bit of a letdown for those looking for impressive drink options, but the way we see it, they specialise in cuisine, not beverages, and they have food down to a tee.
The cuisine and the pleasant environment are certainly the top points of Canto. In our opinion, these two aspects are what makes them a great choice for dining out and enjoying what they have to offer.
We recommend everyone who has yet to visit Canto’s Mediterranean-inspired tapas dining experience to try them out, as they can be the perfect place to try something new.
