Hot and To-Go! Our Top 15 Takeaway Places in Manchester

There are days when we simply don’t feel like firing up the stove. That’s absolutely fine, innit?

Whatever the reason—whether there’s a million things to do, or you’re just not up to the challenge, there’s always the option to get your food to go.

Thank the heavens for Manchester being the great culinary destination that it is, so we’ve got lots of options!

Here’s a list of great takeaway places very dear to our microwave-savvy hearts. Each shop is cherry-picked based on quality and variety of offerings.

Oxford Road’s Babylon Kebab House, a student favourite, kicks off our list of the best places to get takeaways in Manchester.

This humble kebab shop is almost always ready to satisfy the lunch, dinner, or post-pub cravings of the University Area community, located just across the street. However, it is closed for six hours during breakfast time, 4:00 AM until 10:00 AM.

While the doner kebabs are the bomb here, you can also get a whole pizza or spicy chicken wings for a few extra quid. For the best value, grab the chicken fillet burger and pair it with a soda of your choice.

Pro tip:
You’ll have no issues picking up takeaway at Babylon if you’re on foot or commuting. However, finding street parking can be challenging if you’re in a car, so you’ll need to be a bit more creative in getting your kebab fix.

Continuing with our Middle Eastern cuisine takeaway suggestions, our second entry is Etci Mehmet. This spot offers authentic Turkish steak and burgers and was recently awarded the best Turkish steakhouse in the North West by the Northern Enterprise Awards for 2023.

Although you’ll definitely miss Etci Mehmet’s “saltbae”-ish presentation and shisha experience for just having takeaway, we won’t ask you to miss out on the tasty and perfectly-grilled dry-aged steaks here.

The ribeye is a crowd favourite, and paired with some of Etci’s Special Salad, makes for a delightful dinner option at home.

Pro tip:
Etci Mehmet doesn’t have dedicated parking, but this won’t be an issue as long as you’re willing to spend some cash for the street parking metre.

If you’re near St Peter’s Square or the Chinatown area in the city centre, try dropping by 0161 Flamin Grill on Portland Street for some kebabs and burgers.

Although it’s relatively new in the business, 0161 is steadily gaining a loyal following for its juicy kebabs, chicken fingers, and burgers. It also offers Halal food like the flavourful chicken biryani, ready for takeaway at prices that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

Moreover, 0161’s loaded fries are to die for—perfect for a pre-weekend treat. In our opinion, they are the best example of “savoury and filling” French fries.

Pro tip:
0161 Flamin Grill lives up to its name. Expect one of the most spice-filled takeaways when you order here.

Salt & Pepper

Chinese takeaway in the city doesn’t have to be boring. If you’re in the Arndale area, definitely drop by Salt & Pepper at the Arndale Market for some tasty and filling Chinese fast food.

As a crowd favourite, the namesake salt & pepper grilled chicken is the ultimate must-order here, along with the other usual mains like sticky chicken and sticky beef.

If you’re indecisive like some of our team members here at Master Manchester (just kidding!) or want to try a bit of everything, get the mixed box with two or three mains in one serving. You can also enjoy items from the “small bites” menu with a pot of the shop’s signature dipping sauces.

Pro tip:
Salt & Pepper is an excellent choice for those on a vegetarian or vegan diet! Its menu is clearly labelled to show which dishes meet these dietary needs.

Dallas Chicken & Pizza – Manchester

For American-style chicken and pizza, head to Dallas Chicken & Pizza. If you’re tired of the food at Manchester Arndale or need a quick bite before riding the bus home at Shudehill’s main station, Dallas is a great, fast choice.

In our opinion, the BBQ wings are the best offering. The BBQ ribs and BBQ chicken sandwich are also delicious—this place just nails BBQ (disclaimer: as Brits, we’re not really sure if it’s real Texas-style, but it’s great nonetheless)!

For a great family takeaway treat, grab the wings by the bucket. They come in portions ranging from eight pieces to a hefty 30 pieces in one go.

Pro tip:
If you’re low on cash, don’t worry! Dallas Chicken & Pizza takes card payments.

Just a stone’s throw away from our previous entry is This & That Café, a humble Indian takeaway restaurant. Frequently dubbed a “hidden gem” online for the food and location, we have to agree with the public’s opinion.

“This & That” seems to play on the fact that this place feels and looks like a typical Indian canteen, where you point out the dishes you want to the server.

For food, you can’t go wrong with rice and curry. Chicken Tikka Masala is a solid choice, but you can also opt for curries with beans or a potato base if you’re vegetarian or vegan.

Pro tip:
You need some eagle eyes to spot This & That Café, as it’s tucked away on a part of Soap St usually hidden in view from the main streets.

Buzzrocks Caribbean

Address: 166 Stretford Rd, M15 5TL

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Saturday – 12:00 PM to 6:30 PM
  • Sunday – CLOSED

Pricing: £

Menu

Buzzrocks Caribbean is a top spot for jerk chicken takeaway, conveniently located near the Hulme Arch Bridge.

For the best value, try Buzzrock’s meals like the 24-hour marinated jerk chicken special or the curried lamb, both of which are highly recommended. The meals can come with just rice, just peas, or half rice and half chips for carbs.

Since the shop is already close to one of Manchester’s residential areas, it closes earlier than those in the city centre. This is fine for typical 9-to-5 workers but can be inconvenient for those who finish their work day later.

Pro tip:
If you want extra veggies in your jerk chicken takeaway box, you’ll need to pay a bit more for a side of cooked mixed vegetables.

Pieminister – Church St

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Thursday – 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM

  • Sunday – 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Vegans and individuals with celiac disease will love Pieminister on Church Street. This charming pizza place is one of the few in the city that truly understands how to make gluten-free pizza.

The Moo (beef) and Mooless Moo (jackfruit) pizza pies are must-haves for takeaway. For the latter, only the most discerning palates would realize it contains no meat!

To balance it out with the savoury flavours, try any of Pieminister’s sweet puddings—our current favourite is the classic toffee apple crumble pot. The Pieminister slaw is also a great, tangy option to cut through the pies’ salt and oil.

Pro tip:
Pieminister has a click and collect scheme, for faster takeaway transactions.

Tibetan Kitchen – Manchester

Address: 254 Upper Chorlton Rd, Firswood, Stretford M16 0BN

Operating hours: Daily – 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM

Pricing: £

Menu

The Tibetan Kitchen near Upper Chorlton’s post office is a refreshing choice if you’re looking for something unique compared to the usual Asian takeaway.

It’s perhaps the closest you’ll get to eating like a Sherpa or mountaineer about to embark on a long journey climbing Mount Everest.

This family-run restaurant serves delicious momos, also known as the Tibetan version of beef dumplings.

Best served with chilli sauce, these little fried nuggets of savoury goodness pair perfectly with any of the shop’s daily specialities, like the stir-fried Shasha Chicken or the filling Ngo Khatsa curry.

Pro tip:
Tibetan Kitchen is committed to preserving the environment by reducing single-use items. Bring your own bottle or tumbler for drinks!

Casa Mexica – Manchester

Address: Unit 1, The Quadrangle, Chester St M1 5QS

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday – 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Thursday and Friday – 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM
  • Saturday – 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM
  • Sunday – 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Nothing screams “takeaway” more than a burrito. If you’re a student at Metropolitan Manchester Uni’s Engineering Department or just passing by, Casa Mexica should be on your radar for the best take-home meals.

Have the classic or premium beef (or chicken) burrito in a medium or large size. There’s no need to worry about the usual fix-ins paired with it such as guacamole, since it’ll already be included in the price, and not as an add-on for an extra fee.

Like any other Tex-Mex joints, Casa Mexica also offers tacos, nachos, and quesadillas, perfect for Taco Tuesdays.

Pro tip:
If Casa Mexica becomes one of your go-to takeaway spots, consider joining its customer loyalty scheme for discounts and rewards. Just ask about it at the till for more details.

Kabana – Northern Quarter

  • Monday to Friday – 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Saturday – CLOSED
  • Sunday – 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM

Pricing: £

Kabana is another great spot for Indian and Pakistani food at the Northern Quarter. It can be considered as one of the longest-standing Indian restos in the area since it first opened its doors in 1982.

The star of the show at Kabana is the nihari (written as “nehari” in the menu), a savoury spiced stew that the shop typically made with beef. It’s best ordered on Sundays, as it’s customary to eat it on this day.

To get the best of what the restaurant can offer in one go, get the rice and three curries meal with some “nan” (naan).

Pro tip:
Kabana NQ is located on an inner street, so don’t be surprised if it’s a bit hard to spot on your first visit.

Bunsik – Manchester

Address: Unit 1A, Piccadilly Gardens, Parker St, M1 1RG

Contact details: 0161 302 1967

  • Sunday to Thursday – 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Another subcategory of Asian cuisine that has been gaining popularity worldwide the past couple of years is (South) Korean food. Good thing there’s a shop right at Piccadilly Gardens that can satisfy if you’re craving the K-food experience.

For quick takeaway, crowd winners are the corn dogs and dakgangjeong (sweet Korean fried chicken), which can easily be eaten on the go. For more filling meals that have carbs, we currently love the tuna kimbap (the Korean version of rice rolls) and the bibimbap rice meals.

If you’re a student on a budget, keep in mind that Bunsik doesn’t offer a student discount.

Pro tip:
Because of its great location and tasty food, Bunsik often has long queues. Visit during off-peak hours, or be prepared to wait.

Listo Burrito – Manchester

If you’re looking forward to a taco-less Taco Tuesday but still want something Mexican to eat at home, check out Listo Burrito on Oxford Street. This burrito place has been serving bangin’ pockets of rice and meat since 2013.

You can get your burrito in the regular, tortilla-wrapped option, or in a “solo” version in a box that only has the burrito fillings. If you choose the solo, we highly recommend trying Listo’s signature chili con carne filling—quite heavy with carbs on carbs and some protein, but just sooo good.

Don’t forget to throw in some nachos and guac, and you’re golden.

Pro tip:
Get your favourite burrito topping at Listo without any additional charge.

Wright’s Fish & Chips

  • Sunday – CLOSED

Any article about takeaway food wouldn’t be complete without mentioning fish and chips. Wright’s is a chip shop near the City Council Building, making it a great stopover after a long day of public work or corporate grind.

Wright’s prides itself on its traditional-style fish and chips, which come in a couple of ways. Choose between cod or haddock for the fish, and pair it with freshly-fried golden chippies and gravy.

The funny thing about Wright’s is that you’ll likely end up going for takeaway anyway, even if you didn’t plan to, since the shop has too few seats. But we’re not complaining!

Pro tip:
Wright’s Fish & Chips accepts card payments, though with a minimum required bill amount. There’s also an extra charge for takeaway carrier bags.

Pizza Co.

Media from PIZZA CO FRIENDS

Address: 121 Oxford Rd M1 7DU

Contact details: 0161 273 8101

Operating hours:

  • Monday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 AM
  • Tuesday to Saturday – 10:00 AM to 5:00 AM
  • Sunday – 11:00 AM to 4:00 AM

Pricing: £

Menu

Manchester’s University area is truly a goldmine for takeaway meals. Add Pizza Co. to your rotation of go-to restaurants in this area, when you just don’t feel like cooking.

This community-beloved pizzeria and fast food is home to delicious yet cheap pizza, chicken, kebabs, and burgers. Despite being named after the Italian delicacy, the shop’s strongest suit is actually the chicken items in the menu.

The fried chicken is surprisingly juicy with a good crisp on the outside. The spicy wings are also banging; you can get up to nine pieces in one box, or opt for BBQ if you prefer a milder heat.

Pro tip:
Pizza Co.’s boss is a great guy who loves taking snaps with his customers over the counter, so we hope you don’t mind your likeness being immortalised in the shop’s social media! (Of course, you can always decline, but where’s the fun in that?)
