Top 5 Manchester Butchers That Made Our Cut

  • Selection - The butchers in this list sell a wide variety of meats, so you’ll have a lot to choose from when you buy from their stores. That also includes some non-meat products that you can cook together with their meat.
  • Meat sources - Every butcher featured here can easily trace their meat, which they get from local farmers who raise free-range livestock. So every product you buy from them is ethically sourced.
  • Experience - All the butchers we’ve included in this list have years and years of experience in the meat industry, so they know what they’re doing with every cut they sell.
  • Great quality - All of the above points combined lead to some really good meat products that you can get from these butchers. Plus, they put lots of thought and care into the meat preparation.

The Butcher’s Quarter is considered one of the go-to choices for an artisanal butcher, and after we tried some of their meat, we’d have to agree!

Every piece of meat they sell has been responsibly sourced and aged long enough to get that nice tenderness. And with how tasty their meat was, we could tell that they knew the best way to properly store it! Now that’s a butcher we’d trust!

And as another bonus, they also sell cheese and wines that pair pretty well with the meat! We also appreciate that they suggested some of their own recipes on their website, so you could get some ideas on how to cook their meat.

The only issue we had with their meat was that most of it wasn’t meat, but fat! That, and it wasn’t packaged as well as we would have liked, so we hope they can improve on these aspects.

Pros

  • Wide variety in meat selection
  • Locally sourced meat
  • Has proper meat preparation
  • Has proper meat storage
  • Has other products to pair with meat
  • Offers recipes

Cons

  • Tends to sell mostly fatty meat
  • Poor quality packaging

One thing we looked for while scouring Manchester’s artisanal butchers was butchers we can trust with handling and preparing the meat. Fraser’s Butchers, led by an expert in the business of 29 years, definitely fit the bill!

Their meats aren’t just well-prepared and locally sourced, they’re cut into different sizes. So whether you’re buying just for yourself or for a group, you’ll get enough meat to keep a well-stocked fridge! Plus, you won’t run out of options when you’re buying from them!

Aside from raw meats, they also sell meals that you can pop into the oven and have ready in about an hour. Just remember to thoroughly check these meals after buying them, as they can get overlooked in the quality checks!

Oh, and remember to save up quite a bit or wait for a discount, their products are not cheap.

Pros

  • Wide variety in meat selection
  • Wide variety in sizes
  • Locally sourced meat
  • Proper meat preparation
  • Has delivery
  • Has same-day delivery
  • Has other products to pair with meat

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Lack of quality control in sold meals

Reliable for 30 years

“In the 30 years of going to Frasers Butchers I have never been disappointed. The range & quality doesn’t dip. The sausages when cooked never lose size or shape and taste awesome. The joints and meat are of the highest quality. It is however the meals that really tickles the taste buds. The portion sizes are done to customers preference are sealed on site and all you need to do is oven cook. I am a massive fan of this establishment and highly recommend Frasers Butchers. (Even the staff are friendly)”

Amazing and delicious

“We came for the first time yesterday after hearing good things. I wanted some advice [on the best] meats to smoke and ended up buying a 3kg brisket. Lots of advice given and cooked today it was delicious. The hubby also sampled the chilli pork pies and a sausage roll and said both were amazing. [Thank you] for all your help in the shop”

PJ Howarth sells a wide range of premium-quality products, and we mean not just meats! Looking through their selection, you’ll feel like you’ll get food for any meal at any time of the day! And speaking of meals, they sell oven-ready ones too!

They also have most of their meat locally sourced, which is another reason why they made our cut. We even heard that their meat is kept as fresh as possible, and after trying out some of their selection, we can confirm that!

And if, for whatever reason, you can’t go down to their store, you can order some of their products and have them delivered to your doorstep!

The only problem is you’ll have to pay extra if you live farther than a 10-mile radius. That also adds to another issue we have – their products can be quite expensive!

Pros

  • Wide variety in meat selection
  • Has other products to pair with meat
  • Has delivery
  • Has same-day delivery
  • Sells fresh meat
  • Mostly locally sourced meat

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Additional charge on delivery services for further distances

“Fabulous butchers. Has been here in Flixton for years. Great selection of meats and produce. , and let’s not forget … It’s the home of the award winning sausage. Service is always great 👍”

Amazing food

“Picked up 50 sausages, burgers and kebabs for a barbecue. Must say first time coming to this place as I live in Stockport, but will definitely not be the last. My first impression was how friendly all of the staff were and to add to everything on top the food is AMAZING. Fresh meat, perfectly seasoned and not overdone! Definitely a regular customer now, for the price and the quality, I don’t mind the 20 mins distance! I’ll see you very soon 🙌🏽🙌🏽”

You can’t go wrong with sourcing here! Mettrick’s Butchers sells nothing but locally sourced meats that are easily traceable and ethically raised.

They also get their meat from different kinds of farms, which is why they’ve got a whole range of options! Plus, they don’t just sell meats, but also egg and dairy products—convenient if you’re making a recipe!

Speaking of recipes, their website also has a list of their own recipes that you can try making. A lot of them are mouth-wateringly good, and you won’t regret trying them out, so that’s another plus in our books!

If we had to give a point against them, though, we’d say it’s the quality of their products later during the day. Order something from them past late afternoon, and they’ll rush it, so it won’t be as high quality as their usual products. Plus, everything’s quite pricey.

Pros

  • Wide variety in meat selection
  • Locally sourced meat
  • Offers recipes
  • Has other products to pair with meat

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Tend to rush orders
  • Lower quality during later hours

Cracking butcher’s!

“A cracking [butcher’s,] no wonder that this business has won so many awards! Every conceivable cut of meat, local provenance guaranteed, and if it’s not on display John will cut and trim on demand. There are also some delicious prepared meals that just need cooking – we love the Chicken, Mozzarella, Pesto, and Bacon fillets, yum! Homemade sausages, dry cured bacon, etc, etc…”

Price worth the quality

“The chicken shawarma burgers are amazing as is the black garlic stir fry. Happy and friendly stuff. You pay for what you get. Quality”

Littlewoods Butcher is for those who are hunting for some ethically raised meat or who want to support local farmers. You might appreciate that all their meat is locally sourced from farmers who raise free-range livestock.

So if you buy their selection, you’ll be helping out a small farm in Cheshire! And, you can maybe get some great homemade meat pies too, plus some cheese!

And if you’re worried that they don’t know what they’re doing, worry no more! Their butchers have all been trained by the experts, and those experts were also trained by the older experts. In fact, they’ve been doing this for over a century at this point!

But great meat and butchers aside, their products can be pretty pricey, sometimes even if there’s been a blunder with orders. And speaking of orders, you might get a few poor-quality ones!

Pros

  • Wide variety in meat selection
  • Locally sourced meat
  • Experienced in butchery
  • Has delivery service
  • Has other products to pair with meat

Cons

  • Overcharges even with incomplete orders
  • Lack of quality control in sold meat

Great staff and quality

“Amazing quality. Flavour of the beef rib [was like] nothing I’ve had before. Cannot recommend highly enough. Really helpful staff with lots of tips for prep and cooking.”
