Pros

  • One of the longest running adoptions centres in Manchester
  • Great track record of adoptions

Cons

  • Limited time slots
  • Facilities are more catered towards cats

The Millstream Animal Shelter is a local animal shelter committed to bettering the lives of animals in the community. They’ve been around since 1990 and are one of Manchester’s longest-running adoption places.

One thing we love about them is that they’re self-sufficient in terms of funding. For us, this means that all the animals in their establishment are getting enough care to be happy and healthy while with them.

Despite this, they also welcome any donations that their customers may want to give.

We think clients should know right away that most of their pets are cats and ferrets. Based on our research, they also have dogs for adoption; however, they have very few options to choose from.

Another thing that clients should know is that all of their animals are neutered even before adoption. However, we don’t necessarily think this is a downside—just something that clients should consider.

But what we really like about them is that they’re quite knowledgeable about caring for their animals.

From what we’ve seen, they take the time to introduce their furry friends and their backgrounds to their potential parents and give advice and tips on caring for them when you take them home.

We think this is a great way to know if a particular pet is for you and is also one of the reasons why we highly recommend them.

Pros

  • Great facilities
  • Staff is knowledgeable
  • Offers animal training

Cons

  • Records of poor customer service
  • Claims of miscommunication with processes

Dogs Trust Manchester is one of Manchester’s most well-known adoption centres for canine friends. Notably, they have a long history of providing rehoming and adoption services for stray and abandoned dogs.

One thing we love most about them is that they’re flexible in terms of their adoption process.

First, they cover all of the essential costs for your next pet. This includes vaccines, medications, and other fundamental items for their animals.

We think that this is a great way to take a lot of load off on the next fur parent, as initial costs can be very steep, especially when getting a new pet.

Second, they also offer breaks in their adoption. What this means is that if there are life-changing events in the pet owner’s life, they’ll be more than happy to keep the pets in their care.

Third, and probably one of their best characteristics, is that they also offer dog training, both in person and virtually.

We love that they can share their expertise with both new and seasoned dog owners to help them with their fur babies.

The only downside to them is their limited hours and records of poor customer service. From one of surveys, some clients claimed that their miscommunication with Dogs Trust Manchester cost them a chance to take home their chosen puppy.

Although they remain a solid option for getting a new fur baby, we think they should improve on these aspects to provide better service.

Pros

  • Kennel free facilities
  • Good track records of adoption
  • Knowledgeable in animal care

Cons

  • Records of poor customer service
  • Unresponsive to inquiries

Dogs 4 Rescue is a kennel-free adoption centre in Manchester. They’re one of the few facilities that let their foster fur friends live and play together.

This is truly one of the main things we love about them. Their kennel-free philosophy is a positive trait that gave us an initial positive impression of them.

In addition, we also love that their facilities are well-kept and clean. This means their canine fosters can live and play with their energy groups without feeling alone or homeless.

We think clients should know that their adoption process can be strict. For one, they only allow adoptions for those who are located within Greater Manchester.

Although, we think this is understandable since moving and travelling can be stressful for pets.

Another thing we must emphasise is that they require home checks before adoption to ensure that their furry friends have a safe forever home.

These requirements sound pretty daunting, right? Well, in our books, it’s all necessary to ensure their canine friends are in safe hands!

Lastly, we also noted that they can foster pets! We absolutely love that they can provide all of the necessary needs of the dogs to make sure they can be happy while waiting for their next home.

Pros

  • Lots of puppies available for adoption
  • Offers neutering services

Cons

  • Facilities have limited space
  • Expensive

Manchester & Cheshire Dogs’ Home is another one of the longest-running adoption centres in both Manchester and Cheshire. We’re absolutely gobsmacked to learn that they were founded in 1893 and are still continuing their service to date!

Apart from that, there are several more things we love about them.

First, they’re quite knowledgeable in caring for their canine friends and continue to advocate for their cause after many decades.

Second, we love that they offer services to help care for dogs, such as neutering, dog microchipping, and even crematories.

Their tenure is already impressive in itself. However, based on our research, they continue to look for ways to better their services and care for their furry friends.

In addition, we also love that they participate in events and charity runs so that it’s easier for people to meet their canine residents.

One downside to Manchester & Cheshire Dogs’ Home is that their pricing is a bit expensive. However, since they’re a non-profit organisation, all of their proceeds go to additional expenses for their residents—pretty reasonable, eh?

Another thing is that there are claims that they need to be more responsive to inquiries. In particular, some people we’ve spoken with mentioned that they didn’t receive a response to their inquiries.

With that, we recommend visiting their shelter to make the process easier for customers who want to know more about them.

Pros

  • Well-kept facilities
  • Advocate for animal lives

Cons

  • Visitation is by appointment only
  • Website information is not updated

The Society for Abandoned Animals is a Manchester-based animal charity. They mostly care for and rehome unwanted cats and rabbits but also have dogs for adoption.

Initially, what we love about them is that they advocate for healthy animal lives. Their website mentioned that they never put down healthy animals, which is a big plus in our books.

In addition, we were pleased to find that all of their animals are fully vetted, vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped before adoption, strengthening our initial impression of them.

They also have a lot of volunteers that work for them, which is a plus! The way we see it, more hands mean that their animals are well cared for.

We do have to note that most of their residents are cats and bunnies. From our research, they also have canine friends who are up for adoption but it may be quite limited compared to other dog homes in the area.

Another thing we must mention is that visitation is by appointment only. They don’t accept walk-ins, so it’s best to contact them before visiting to ensure you’ll be entertained.
