The Top 5 Therapists in Manchester to Help You Start Your Healing Journey

  • Qualifications - We only chose therapists in Manchester with professional accreditation, but also looked at their specialisation to ensure they can work with clients experiencing various issues, like anxiety and relationship problems.
  • Approach - A therapist must provide a safe space so the client will feel secure to open up without feeling judged.
  • Session Format and Availability - For this, we checked how easy it is to book an appointment and whether they offer in-person and online sessions, to make room for clients with packed calendars.
  • Fees - A therapy session in Manchester that doesn’t break the bank makes it more accessible to those who need it. This way, they can accommodate clients who want to skip the NHS waiting list.

When life gives you baskets upon baskets of lemons, it’s reasonable to feel stressed out. Sometimes, challenges can lead to bad lemonade that’s simply too sour to taste.

Take me, for example, who almost broke down in Piccadilly Station one night when my paper bag ripped from the bottom. It was my last straw, but an urgent session with my therapist completely saved me.

If you’re suffering from mental health problems or feeling overwhelmed with life, try seeing a professional. Manchester is equipped with remarkable private therapists, who will peel back the layers of your problems without waiting months to get a booking!

We weren’t at all surprised that Matthew Landers Therapy made it to the top of our list. He’s the kind of therapist who will make you feel safe straight away, which truly helps when you feel vulnerable.

He’s a BACP-registered therapist in Manchester who helps clients from all walks of life, and his specialisation stretches from work to post-traumatic issues. Remarkable, but more so that his strategy comes from neuroscience, meditation, and mindfulness.

He starts with a free 15-minute phone consultation, which is always appreciated. Landers’ flexibility should be noted too, as he offers face-to-face and online therapy for individuals and couples (from young people to older adults).

The limelight goes to his willingness to help everyone, as he offers concessionary rates every month (but with limited availability), whilst having reasonable prices already (starting at £65).

Truly, we have nothing but good things to say about his therapy sessions. A client I spoke with was pleased with his progress after only a couple of sessions, as he was able to reflect and make positive changes through Landers’ effective therapy methods.

Pros

  • Clients range from young people to older adults
  • Face-to-face and online sessions
  • Uses a variety of therapy strategies
  • Offers lower-cost sessions
  • Caters to all backgrounds
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Limited availability for lower-cost sessions

Created a space where I’ve felt safe

“I’ve had a few therapists in the past, but I often disengaged when the work became emotionally overwhelming. Working with Matt for the past year has been a very different experience. He’s helped me stay accountable, challenged me when needed, and created a space where I’ve felt safe enough to really process my emotions which has been very healing in itself. He’s accommodating, patient and asks the right questions when you’re stuck. With his support, I’ve been working through challenges that had held me back for a long time. Highly recommend :)”

Sacha Touma (Sacha), Google Review

Really empathetic, patient, and affirming

“Matt is a really empathetic, patient and affirming counsellor. He also integrates mindfulness teaching and practices with his therapeutic work, which I’ve found extremely helpful. Highly recommended :)”

Anna Timperley’s no-pressure therapy sessions make her highly accessible for patients in Manchester. It starts with a no-obligation initial consultation, which runs for 45 minutes, way longer than usual.

She specialises in online and phone sessions, making therapy easily accessible for clients pressed for time. The hiccup is the lack of face-to-face sessions, which some clients may prefer to virtual appointments.

As a BACP-registered therapist, she knows how to talk to clients through a screen (or a phone). Her person-centred counselling approach delighted us, as it’s non-directive, which clients have noted made them feel more open about their vulnerabilities.

She works with individuals aged 18 and up who are struggling with depression, loss, identity issues, relationship problems, low self-esteem, and various other issues. Her reach is quite incredible, as she tackles pretty much all problems.

Timperley’s therapy sessions won’t break the bank. That, coupled with her flexible hours, makes her worth checking out.

Pros

  • Long no-obligation initial consult
  • Person-centred approach
  • Affordable prices
  • Flexible hours

Cons

  • No face-to-face sessions

Amazing at helping me with stress and anxiety

“Anna has been amazing at helping me with stress and anxiety. Even though our sessions were online, they felt just as effective and personal as meeting in person. She’s really easy to talk to and has given me lots of practical ways to cope day-to-day. I’ve noticed real improvements in my wellbeing. I’d definitely recommend her to anyone looking for support. Thanks again Anna!”

Happiness in Mind, headed by Dr. Aoiffe Kilcommons, is a service that specialises in clinical psychology. It’s incredible that they use evidence-based strategies whilst including holistic therapies for a more personalised approach.

She has the qualifications to provide therapy for various issues, such as stress, anger, trauma, phobias, depression, and addiction. What stood out the most from clients was her professional yet welcoming approach.

As she’s a clinical psychologist, you can expect a mix of therapy, training, and supervision. The sessions here are rather improved, since they focus on resilience training, helping you adapt to life’s challenges.

What’s remarkable is that she uses various therapy methods, such as Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), both research-backed treatments.

Her holistic therapies also include Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), which is like acupuncture, but without needles. It’s simply tapping the energy points with your fingers while incorporating affirmations to help shift your beliefs.

Evening slots are limited, though. But she is available in three clinics: Openshaw and West Didsbury in Manchester, and in Wilmslow, 30 minutes from Piccadilly.

Pros

  • A clinical psychology service
  • Applies research-backed and holistic methods
  • Uses CBT and CAT methods
  • Has three clinics
  • Focused on resilience training

Cons

  • Evening sessions are limited

I gained insight into why I behave a certain way

“Initially I was sceptical about what I would achieve through these sessions. However I found that over the sessions I gained insight into why I behave in a certain way – how I put in place coping mechanisms which might not always be helpful for ME. My biggest learn was how to treat myself as I would a friend. I was given practical methods to keep a balance and I’m looking forward to putting these into practice more and more.”

Tracey Farleigh, Google Review

Can’t speak highly enough of the impact that the sessions had for me

“I was referred to Aoiffe as part of my recovery from injuries with a focus on the mental impact caused by injuries. Can’t speak highly enough of the impact that the sessions had for me with regards to the mental side of injury management and prevention, as well as the day to day life benefits.”

Ciara Cummings is a psychotherapist in Manchester, offering in-person, online, and phone appointments. Her office on Tib Lane is easy to reach, as it has wheelchair accessibility and is located smack in the city centre.

She takes it even further by welcoming not just adults, but also children, teens, and younger adults. Sessions longer than an hour, however, have limited spots.

We were pleased with the wide array of issues she provides therapy for, such as ADHD/ADD, sexual identity, and suicidal ideation.

But how does she fare as a therapist? Very affable! Her clients even praised her for being accommodating during emergency therapy sessions.

Her easygoing nature was rather expected, given that her person-centred and solution-focused methods drive for a positive change and empower clients. We want to note her use of other approaches that result in a more personalised solution, like CBT.

As for the prices, Cummings charges within the average range of therapy in Manchester. It’s not the most affordable, but not exactly exorbitant either.

Pros

  • In-person, online, and phone sessions
  • Wheelchair-accessible office
  • Caters to children and adults
  • Person-centred approach
  • Uses a variety of therapy methods

Cons

  • Limited spots for long therapy sessions

Completely reshapes your life

“An amazing woman inside and out. Completely reshapes your life and allows you to refocus, realign and come to terms with past grief, guilt and trauma. Nothing is too minor or major for Ciara, no judgement; only positivity and a sympathetic ear when needed most. Thank you so much for changing my life x”

“Amazing therapist, I have truly seen a change for the better in my long term sessions. It takes a weight off my shoulders and helps me feel regulated”

Led by Dr. Gregory Warwick, Quest Psychology Services provides a range of therapy methods for various issues, which include depression, bereavement, PTSD, and low self-esteem.

What truly jumped out was the therapy methods he specialises in, because there are loads. This includes CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR).

Conveniently, he provides online and face-to-face therapy sessions. And he’s a highly qualified therapist in Manchester—after all, he has experience in treating complex PTSD for adults and children, as well as being a former lead psychologist in a hospital.

The level of attention he has given his clients has been remarkable. Some of them praised Dr. Warwick for helping them deal with complex issues, whilst showing a professional and calm demeanour.

He’s going to cost you, though, as his private therapy starts at £100 per session. It makes sense because he’s quite well-known by the media for his expertise.

Pros

  • Uses a wide range of therapy methods
  • Worked as a forensic hospital’s lead psychologist
  • Open for in-person and online sessions
  • Works with adults and children

Cons

  • Quite pricey

Absolutely first class

“Absolutely first class, I found Greg to be very approachable. He gave advice and tips to help me process a lot of my issues which had been bothering me over the last few years. His guidance and suggestions help me reflect on how to deal with everything that was affecting me and using simple tools like Dearman in helping me accepting what had happened. I would highly recommend 5 stars. Thank you Greg.”

Simon Hodgson, Google Review

A brilliant therapist

“Greg is a brilliant therapist. I was suffering from PTSD and had chronic anxiety. I was having intrusive thoughts constantly, that were severely effecting my quality of life and ability to work. In only 3 months, through various methods including EMDR and mindfulness techniques Greg helped me recover fully and feel better than I have in the last 5 years. I would highly recommend Greg to anyone with anxiety and PTSD.”
