The 5 BEST Animation Studios in Manchester for 2D, 3D, & Motion Graphics

  • Expertise – The top Mancunian animation studios in our book are ones that have extensive knowledge in the different aspects of the art, whether in 2D, 3D, or other types of animation.
  • Portfolio – Projects are a studio’s lifeline and testament of quality, so we only considered ones that have many and also notable projects. We believe that an extensive portfolio is solid proof of a studio’s creativity and versatility.
  • Creative Process – While we understand that every organisation’s creative processes are unique, we can’t just underestimate the effect of brilliant ideas and sublime flow of a great studio in doing its business.
  • Professionalism – This one can go without saying, but still a good thing to reiterate. The best studios should have clear, efficient communication with their clients in order to fully understand and get any project’s message across.

With many people now chronically online, creating attractive videos that perfectly get any message across has never been so relevant.

This is very true, especially for enterprising Mancunians who need to effectively let prospective customers know all about the services they can offer. It isn’t easy going viral, but with proper 2D, 3D, or motion graphics in your video, the possibilities are endless.

Here’s our review of five of the best animation studios in Manchester right now. Check them out below, give one (or all) a ring, and who knows—you might find your creative match!

Groundbreak Productions is an animation studio that’s been around for over 10 years. It’s better known for its video production work, often contracted by advertising for live-action commercials.

However, it also has a solid animation wing that has delivered campaigns for well-known organisations such as Brother (the office equipment company) and the National Crime Agency.

While most of its portfolio focuses on explainers, infographics, and public service announcements, we really appreciate the studio’s overall formal aesthetic.

Its use of symbolic vectors and carefully chosen colours that align with each client’s message and ethos makes its work especially effective in communicating ideas clearly.

That said, Groundbreak Productions seems best suited to serious-minded clients—multinational corporations and government agencies in particular. Still, we’d love to see the studio take on a quirky, fun animation project sometime soon.

Pros

  • Operating for more than 10 years
  • More formal animation and design styles
  • Great for corporate and government clients

Cons

  • Studio has more focus on live-action than animation projects
  • Portfolio could use more innovative entries

You’ve probably seen some of Mighty Giant’s work without even realising it—like the title sequences for children’s telly shows on CBBC, seasonal campaigns for Chester Zoo, and a wide range of projects in collaboration with ad agencies and brands.

This 2D and 3D animation design company has been around for 15 years, so that’s why.

We think we understand why Mighty Giant has become a standout in Manchester’s animation scene. It comes down to its distinct artistic style—bright, polished, and warm, with a visual flair that feels professional and inviting.

While storytelling always depends on the client’s needs, this studio consistently excels in grabbing people’s attention through appealing visuals.

We believe its services are especially well-suited for larger businesses. However, startups shouldn’t hesitate to reach out.

Mighty Giant has shown repeatedly that its professionalism extends to handling smaller-scale inquiries and projects with the same level of care and quality.

Pros

  • Over 15 years in business
  • Worked with big, recognisable clients
  • Bright styles and attention-grabbing storytelling
  • Well-rounded for many types of clients

Cons

  • Could be more apt for bigger corporate clients

Helpful, flexible, and value for money

“Mighty Giant developed a series of high quality CGI films for me. The team were very helpful at every stage of the process, were able to quickly flex to my changing requirements, and delivered excellent value for money. I highly recommend them!”

Mark Pomfret, Google Review

Outstanding for urgent, big projects

“We partnered with Mighty Giant on a Christmas animation project with a big scope and a tight deadline. Not only was the final video outstanding, they’re a pleasure to work with – organised, will always go the extra mile, and great at jumping the hurdles that often arise when working on large scale animated projects. We continue to work with them and would recommend others to do so!”

This one’s for those who are just starting out. Joe Mule is a fairly young animation studio that specialises in creating explainer videos for ads, brands, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies.

Given its clientele, it makes perfect sense that the studio uses colourful, lively visuals paired with tech-savvy and authoritative messaging—it’s brilliantly creative and strategic for growing businesses.

We love how it excels in simplifying the complex processes of its clients, particularly those in the technology sector. These easily digestible concepts provide a clearer platform for users to understand the services being introduced.

So, if you’re a future-forward business, Joe Mule could be the animation studio for you. Many of its past clients are startups, giving the studio a proper amount of experience working with similar minds.

Pros

  • Great for startups and smaller businesses
  • Niche on explainer videos for tech companies
  • Simplifies complicated ideas skilfully

Cons

  • Portfolio seems to lack work for larger organisations
  • Might not be a proper fit for non-tech clients

Impressive work on complex information

“Highly recommend the team at Joe Mule. With our product’s complexity and many features, we initially needed help conveying its value proposition to our audience. The Joe Mule team took all the information and turned it into a compelling and concise explainer video that perfectly showcased our product’s benefits – perfect for expos, social media, and our website. We are really impressed with their work and our end product!”

A studio to work with again

“Chris and his team were amazing when we were looking for help creating a new brand film! They were helpful in the brainstorming and copywriting process and were really able to take our complex ideas and run with them!! We absolutely LOVE the final product and look forward to working with their team again in the future. Thank you!!”

Kilogramme Animation is often seen as a bigwig in Mancunian animation, with over 20 years at its helm.

It has handled quite a lot of projects, including advertisements, title sequences for shows on the telly, explainer videos, as well as films and museum exhibits—quite a feat!

Notable clients of the team include the BBC, Transport for Greater Manchester (a.k.a. our city’s Bee Network), and English Heritage, with information campaigns and product advertisements.

What makes Kilogramme’s work very interesting is its use of clean designs, which are streamlined and feel consistently welcoming. However, we’re not saying that the studio plays it safe (quite the opposite!) because its storytelling is usually great and catches the client’s requirements.

With that said, it isn’t surprising that the studio has racked up awards throughout the years, including ones from the BAFTAs and the Royal Television Society.

Pros

  • Experienced and well-known studio
  • Diverse project portfolio
  • Worked with big and popular clients
  • Streamlined art styles
  • Award-winning studio

Cons

  • Not for those looking for the “basic” stuff

Integrates client requisites with studio expertise

“Jon and Claire worked with us to develop an ‘explainer’ animation to help us communicate the results of our research project to a non-academic audience, primarily parents and children. They integrated our ideas and requirements with their own expertise to create something I think we can all be proud of. The end result is really more than we could have hoped for. Thank you!”

Amy Thompson, Google Review

A studio full of great work and talent

“A great animation studio with lots of brilliant work under their belt and plenty of talent. I have visited a couple of times and see their work regularly at Motion North and I’m always impressed with what I see.”

We’re relieved to know that not all animation studios are purely driven by profit. Take Flow Creative, for example—a relatively new animation studio with a mission to use its team’s creative juices to make a positive impact on the world.

Flow mainly works with non-profit and charity organisations to help spread awareness about various causes and projects. Some of its past clients include the BBC, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and even our own city council.

We found that this studio’s colourful 2D and 3D animations are effective in bringing its clients’ messages to life. It often features cheerful elements and characters that just look so friendly and loveable!

We’re glad that Flow isn’t afraid to push boundaries, too. It experiments with different ways of sharing its outputs, through online platforms like Giphy, beyond the usual content-sharing sites.

Because of this innovative approach, we completely understand why Flow has already garnered several major awards, even though it hasn’t been around for a full decade yet.

Pros

  • Focuses on positive social impact
  • Worked with popular clients
  • Vibrant and affable art style
  • Uses innovative methods
  • Award-winning studio

Cons

  • Quite a young organisation
  • Might not be fit for commercial (for profit) projects

Creative even for mundane subjects

“We have worked with Flow Creative on numerous animation projects. One that springs to mind was a job we worked on for Porsche – the client had a really boring subject matter – Compliance – and our brief was to make it into something fun and engaging plus in-keeping with the Porsche brand. We delivered the project to our delighted client thanks to the slick animation produced by the Flow Creative team. Looking forward to working with you guys the next project.”

Creative even for mundane subjects

“Flow Creative’s team delivered exceptional results in developing our motion guidelines. Their collaborative approach, deep expertise, and attention to brand alignment resulted in highly accessible guidelines and templates. Thanks to their work, we have the guidance we need for consistency and creative flexibility for our motion projects.”
